Enhancing antimicrobials with CITROX®

January 24, 2019 2 min read

Oral diseases manifest quickly, as a result of the mouth being continuously exposed to bacteria. In order to reduce a patient’s risk of developing future complications, it is essential to prevent plaque formation and accumulation by eradicating potentially harmful microbes within the oral cavity. It is then vital to ensure that bacteria are unable to adhere to the teeth, gingivae and mucous membranes—particularly after oral surgery. Professor of oral microbiology at Laval University Daniel Grenier has investigated the capacity of several oral healthcare products to kill biofilm-embedded microorganisms and promote the desorption of preformed biofilm.[i]

In his study, professor Grenier tested 13 different oral healthcare products with antimicrobial and anti-biofilm properties against major aetiological agents of dental caries and periodontal disease, as well as Candida species. The study demonstrated that concentrations of 0.5 or 1 per cent Citrox solution were effective against all the microorganisms tested. Concentrations of 1 or 2 per cent Citrox solution were effective at killing several microorganisms in their preformed biofilm states. When Citrox was added to a conventional mouthrinse ingredient—including hyaluronic acid—improved antibacterial results were achieved.

Research by professor Daniel Grenier from Laval University has shown that Citrox as a natural supplement can enhance other antimicrobials without interfering with their active agents. The findings are encouraging with regard to naturally improved oral healthcare products. (Photograph: Curaden)

In some cases, adding a concentration of 1 per cent Citrox solution to one of the mouthrinses significantly increased the ability of the product to kill and desorb a preformed Fusobacterium nucleatum biofilm, which is an oral bacterium commonly associated with periodontal disease. The study also found that, even in a diluted formula of medicine used to treat colds and flu, it is likely that Citrox—in combination with ingredients such as alcohol, hyaluronan and mint oil—could exhibit enhanced antibacterial activity against bacteria, including F. nucleatum.

“The fact that Citrox does not detrimentally interfere with the antimicrobial properties of other ingredients—but enhances them—makes it an ideal solution for eradicating potentially harmful microorganisms.”

The results of professor Grenier’s study are particularly encouraging with regard to the application of Citrox as a natural additive supplement in oral healthcare products. Research has already proven that Citrox combined with chlorhexidine is more effective against oral bacteria than either of these substances used alone. The fact that Citrox does not detrimentally interfere with the antimicrobial properties of other ingredients—but enhances them—makes it an ideal solution for eradicating potentially harmful microorganisms and preventing the subsequent build-up of plaque. This could prove significantly helpful in ensuring patients are able to effectively manage acute dental problems and protect their teeth and gingivae from further complications.
